On the next American Black Journal, we’re continuing our special series, “Do Black Lives Matter in America?,” produced in partnership with the community-based news organization, BridgeDetroit.

This week, we take a closer look at the relationship between Detroit police and the community, especially in light of the ongoing Black Lives Matter protests. Stephen Henderson talks with Detroit Police Assistant Chief Todd Bettison about building trust in the community, an uptick in violence, and a recent incident caught on video showing a suspect being punched by officers.

Orlando Bailey gets the community perspective on policing techniques and neighborhood safety from social activist Tawana Petty and BridgeDetroit reporter Bryce Huffman. They give their thoughts on police use of surveillance and facial recognition software to fight crime and keep residents safe. Plus, we’ll have a preview of an upcoming PBS documentary on “Driving While Black.”
