One Detroit – Tuskegee Airmen / Ray Gray / 20 Front Street / YoYo Ma

This episode originally aired on March 29, 2021

  • Tuskegee Airmen Move to Charles H. Wright: Stephen Henderson has the story on the legendary Tuskegee airmen who marked their 80th anniversary on March 22. It was on that date in 1941 that President Franklin D. Roosevelt activated the all-Black World War II fighter squadron. They were the first African American aviators in the U.S. armed forces. A virtual anniversary celebration will include the grand opening of a new home for the Tuskegee Airmen National Museum.
  • Ray Gray: After decades behind bars, could commutation be possible? We have some news about Ray Gray, a Michigan man who is one of the state’s longest serving inmates. He’s also well known for the art he has created while incarcerated. We did a story on him this fall and the push by the Innocence Project for Ray to be released after decades behind bars. One Detroit’s Bill Kubota has more.
  • 20 Front Street: Scott Loudon, Co-Owner and Creative Director of the 92 seat venue Twenty Front Street in Downtown Lake Orion, MI tells us how he and his partners are working to bring national and local artists into an intimate concert space where they produce high-quality video of each performance as they push to be the midwest version of Austin City Limits.
  • Yo-Yo Ma: We’ll close with a look at how, after receiving his Covid vaccine, world-famous musician Yo-Yo Ma serenaded others waiting for their turn to get vaccinated.
