One Detroit – COVID numbers / Trade School / White Supremacist Propaganda / Pet Adoption

  • Why are Michigan’s COVID numbers so high? COVID cases in Michigan are surging. Virologist Dr. Oveta Fuller from the University of Michigan talks with Christy McDonald about what’s brought on Michigan’s latest COVID wave, the effectiveness of the vaccines, and the factors behind making vaccines available to kids 12-15.
  • Despite the pandemic, a carpenters trade school nears completion in Detroit It’s been 2 years since the announcement that the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights would build a new training center in the city of Detroit, part of an effort to get more Detroiters into the construction trades workforce. Despite some delays because of the pandemic, the training center is rolling toward completion with carpenter trainees helping build it.
  • White Supremacist Propaganda on the Rise The Anti-Defamation League recently released a new report on white supremacist propaganda in 2020, which showed the highest level of cases reported – an average of about 14 incidents per day – nearly double the 2,713 cases reported in 2019. One Detroit’s Will Glover talks with ADL Michigan Regional Director, Carolyn Normandin, about how the messaging of white supremacist propaganda has shifted and how to spot it.
  • Pet Adoption in a Pandemic There has been a wave of pet adoptions since the pandemic, but some of these nonprofits helping match pets with new owners need help themselves. One Detroit Editor Chris Jordan takes us to the Ferndale Catfe where he found his new friend, Tom Tom.
