One Detroit – Future Leadership / Fixing the Districts / Eviction Moratorium Ending

 Tonight on One Detroit:

  • Detroit’s Future Leadership

Detroit’s primary elections are coming up in just over a week. One Detroit contributors, Nolan Finley of The Detroit News and Stephen Henderson of American Black Journal, got together to talk about who’s on the ballot, the contention over proposed charter revisions, and the future of the mayoral seat.

The Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission (MICRC) just finished its first round of public meetings across the state as they gather input to redraw congressional and state legislative maps for the 2022 election. But they’ve faced obstacles along the way—including a 6 months-delayed delivery of the recent census numbers. The Michigan Supreme Court also recently denied the MICRC’s request for a deadline extension to draw the maps. One Detroit’s Bill Kubota has been following the process and gives a primer on how it works.

  • The Eviction Moratorium Expires Soon—How Renters Can Get Help

The federal moratorium on evictions expires on July 31st. Housing experts say it’s difficult to determine how many struggling tenants could be evicted after the moratorium lifts. One Detroit’s Will Glover talks with Ashley Lowe and Kellie Foster from Lakeshore Legal Aid for more on the process of getting assistance.
