• Detroit Jazz Fest: The 2020 Detroit Jazz Festival presented by Rocket Mortgage will be streamed and broadcast “live” for free this Labor Day weekend. The Festival begins on Friday, Sept. 4 and runs through Monday, Sept. 7. The Festival, which will be held without audiences, will offer this new virtual format in recognition of current city, state and federal safety guidelines for public gatherings during the pandemic. All performances will be streamed or broadcasted live (no replays or on-demand) from indoor sound stages at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center and closed to the public. Stephen Henderson talks with Chris Collins, Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation president and artistic director, in conjunction with Rocket Mortgage Director of Community Sponsorships Jasmin DeForrest.
• Arts, Beats & Eats: While the festival has been canceled, virtual and small-scale live activation will take its place to spread a little bit of art, music, food and health, including a major effort to support the local music industry. The featured component of the 2020 event reincarnation will be “The Beats Go On…” which seeks to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for local musicians, as well as spread the joy of music virtually and through limited capacity drive-in concerts Labor Day Weekend.  Christy McDonald talks with the festival producer, Jon Witz to find out more.
• Detroit Performs: DDCdances is a professional contemporary dance company dedicated to the creation and production of visually striking repertory.
• Sila: Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings (DCWS) blends unconventional stage design and a precise orchestral score to create an outdoor, socially distant concert on August 29 at 6 p.m. This concert will be presented in collaboration with the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival (GLCMF). In their first live concert since March, John Luther Adams’ “Sila: The Breath of the World” will be presented with 32 professional musicians filling The Quad at Cranbrook Upper School, performing to an audience of no more than 68 people. • Performance: We will take a look at an archived performance by Joan Belgrave performed at the Blue LLama Jazz Club.
