Michigan residents rally around Ukraine after President Trump pauses funding for war against Russia

Mar 6, 2025

A crowd of more than 50 people gathered at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Warren on Tuesday, March 4, following reports that President Donald Trump paused U.S. funding of the Ukrainian war effort against Russia.

The rally was led by the Ukrainian-American Crisis Response Committee of Michigan. Recent Census statistics show more than 36,000 people of Ukrainian ancestry living in Michigan, many of them in Macomb County.

Ukrainian Americans were joined by other supporters of Ukraine, many reacting to a heated meeting between Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and President Trump on Feb. 28, in which the American president insisted Ukraine should express more gratitude for U.S. support and agree to a ceasefire with Russia.

One Detroit’s Bill Kubota attended the rally to talk with organizers and other Macomb County residents who came out to support Ukraine.
