Eight fun events happening around Detroit this weekend: January 17, 2025

This weekend features a variety of events including a Friday Night Live! performance by the Michigan Philharmonic at the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Novi Home Show at Suburban Collection Showplace, and a scientist spotlight at the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  

There’s also an exhibit at The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, a Havana night at Baker’s Keyboard Lounge and a game of Jeopardy at the Outdoor Adventure Center. One Detroit contributor Peter Whorf of 90.9 WRCJ shares what’s coming up around the region on “One Detroit Weekend.” 

Upcoming Events: 

  • The Fisher Theatre in Detroit hosts performances of “Golden Girls: The Laughs Continue” Jan. 16-19. The show parodies the beloved series with a lot of humor and antics.  
  • The Detroit Institute of Arts hosts a Friday Night Live! performance with the Michigan Philharmonic on Jan. 17. The concert features pieces by Debussy and Prokofiev. 
  • The exhibit “I, Charles H. Wright” opens at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History on Jan. 17. The exhibit highlights Wright’s extraordinary life and accomplishments.  
  • The Novi Home Show takes place at Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi Jan. 17-19, where hundreds of vendors will be available with home renovation equipment and services.  
  • Baker’s Keyboard Lounge in Detroit hosts Havana Nights in Motown on Jan. 18, where attendees can experience authentic Latin jazz and salsa music. Reservations are recommended. 
  • The University of Michigan Museum of Natural History celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Jan. 20 with a scientist spotlight where attendees can meet scientists of color and learn about their research.  
  • The Outdoor Adventure Center in Detroit hosts an Active Aging Adventures Brunch and Learn on Jan. 23, during which attendees can play Jeopardy! The Michigan State Parks Edition. 
  • The Meadow Brook Theatre at Oakland University presents a production of “Footloose the Musical” through Feb. 2. The play is based on the hit 1984 movie starring actor Kevin Bacon.
