One Detroit Weekend: October 13, 2023

Get ready to get spooky as this weekend kicks off with some Friday the 13th frights. From the Spooky Spirits event at the Detroit Zoo to the After Dark Friday the 13th at the Michigan Science Center, the Detroit Art Book Fair and more, Detroit has plenty of events to attend this weekend. Check out what you can do around metro Detroit this weekend and into next week on “One Detroit Weekend” with contributors Peter Whorf and Dave Wagner of 90.9 WRCJ. 

List of Upcoming Events: 

  • Join a night of scientific fright as The Michigan Science Center will host a 21+ “After Dark Friday the 13th” event featuring a Stranger Things laser show, alchemy-inspired cocktails, music and more. The event runs from 6-11 p.m.; admission includes a free drink ticket.
  • Spend your Friday the 13th at the Detroit Zoo’s Spooky Spirits event, from 6-10 p.m. Oct. 13. The event will feature a screening of “Friday the 13th,” a haunted trail, live entertainment and life size games, music, habitat chats, themed-photo opportunities and more.
  • Join dozens of independent publishers, artists, writers and collectors showcasing their books, zines and prints at the Detroit Art Book Fair from 12-6 p.m. Oct. 14 and 12-4 p.m. Oct. 15 at Trinosophes in Detroit’s Eastern Market neighborhood.
  • World-renowned flutist Alexander Zonjic will perform at the Dirty Dog Jazz Café Oct. 12-14 alongside his friends and musicians Mike Harrington, Kris Kurzawa, Jeff Canady and Tony Gordon.
  • Catch actor, director, writer and native Michigander Jeff Daniels’ production of “Diva Royale” at the Purpose Rose Theatre in Chelsea, Michigan. The show, written and directed by Daniels, runs through Dec. 23 with all of the original cast returning.
  • The Detroit Artists Market will host “In Other Words: Reimagining writing beyond language,” an exhibit curated by Veronica Bielat, and on display through Oct. 21. The exhibit explores how communication can transcend writing and other languages of expression.
  • Hear some of the most famous church hymns at the Great and Glorious Hymns of the Church festival Oct. 15 at Cherry Hill Presbyterian Church. The concert will feature the Motor City Brass Band, 50 singers from Dearborn churches, and Dave Wagner will accompany on the organ.
  • Join the Livingston County Concert Band for its “Animals on Parade” performance at 3 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Pod Bushey Performing Arts Center. Children are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes, as the concert will also feature a costume parade and goody bags for kids.
