Things to do around Detroit this weekend: February 7, 2024

It’s the first weekend of Black History Month, and you can celebrate with the Stepper’s Ball at the Detroit Institute of Arts. There are also several performances coming to town including “Ruby – The Musical” at Music Hall Detroit and the Shen Yun Dance Company at the Detroit Opera House. Plus, don’t miss The Price is Right Live at the Fox Theatre in Detroit and a night of comedy at the Detroit Shipping Company. One Detroit contributors Haley Taylor and Peter Whorf of 90.9 WRCJ share some events and activities happening around metro Detroit this weekend.

Upcoming Events: 

  • “I Love Steppin” presents the “Stepper’s Ball: Steppin’ Into Black History” at the Detroit Institute of Arts on Feb. 7. Attendees can enjoy an evening of Chicago-style stepping with an introductory class to learn the moves. 
  • The Michigan Chronicle and The Knight Foundation present “Ruby – The Musical,” the true story of Ruby McCollum, Feb. 7-9. at the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts. 
  • The Hartland Players presents “Murder at the Howard Johnson‘s,” a suspenseful comedy about a love triangle in a Howard Johnson Motor Inn, Feb. 7-8 at the Hartland Music Hall.  
  • The Shen Yun Dance Company brings its highly sought-after dance performances to the Detroit Opera House on Feb. 7-9.  
  • Huron RiverGrass: A Celebration of Bluegrass Music takes place at the Suzanne Haskew Arts Center (The SHAC) in Milford on Feb. 7-8 featuring performances by High Mile, The Outfit and Wilson Thicket.  
  • 313 Comedy presents a night of standup at the Detroit Shipping Company on Feb. 9. The event is held weekly on Sunday evenings. 
  • Broadway in Detroit brings “Come From Away” to the Fisher Theatre in Detroit Feb. 11-16. The musical tells the true story of Newfoundland residents who cared for stranded airline passengers after Sept. 11.  
  • The Price is Right Live takes place at the Fox Theatre in Detroit on Feb. 12. The interactive game show invites audience members to play classic games like Plinko, Cliffhangers and more.
