Things to do around Detroit this weekend: January 3, 2025

Happy New Year! The new year brings a slate of new performances and art exhibits to enjoy in and around Detroit. “Six The Musical” will be performed at the Fisher Theatre, “Brahms x Radiohead” comes to Orchestra Hall, and The Encore Musical Theatre Company presents a production of “Annie.” Plus, check out the Winter Wonderland at Columbia Street presented by District Detroit and Chris Schanck’s “A Surreality” exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. Contributors Cecelia Sharpe and Haley Taylor share what’s coming up around the region on “One Detroit Weekend.” 

Upcoming Events: 

  • “Six The Musical,” a production about the lives of Henry VIII’s six wives, comes to the Fisher Theatre in Detroit Jan. 7-12.  
  • The Detroit Symphony Orchestra presents “Brahms x Radiohead,” a performance that will blend the composer’s “Symphony No. 1” with the band’s “OK Computer” album, at Orchestra Hall in Detroit on Jan. 8. 
  • The Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts in Detroit hosts a performance by Grand Funk Railroad, the American rock band that originates from Flint. The concert takes place on Jan. 9.  
  • Chris Schanck’s “A Surreality” exhibit is on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit through Feb. 23. The exhibit explores science fiction, myth and fantasy.  
  • Cranbrook Art Museum presents the “How We Make the Planet Move: A Detroit Collection Part 1” exhibit through March 2. The exhibit pays homage to the artists who have called Detroit home and the area’s rich and diverse community. 
  • Theater NOVA in Ann Arbor presents a production of “The Elves And The Schumachers Two: Chanukah Boogaloo,” a holiday mash-up of musical comedy slapstick, vaudeville and more. The production runs through Jan. 5.  
  • District Detroit presents a Winter Wonderland at Columbia Street in downtown Detroit through Jan. 5, featuring hot chocolate and other festive treats as well as places to take pictures. The event is free to attend.  
  • The Encore Musical Theatre Company in Dexter performs the Tony Award-winning musical “Annie” through Jan. 12.
