Things to do around Detroit this weekend: January 31, 2025

It’s the last weekend of January and there are a handful of fun activities happening around the Detroit region, including the Detroit Boat Show, the Plymouth Ice Festival, and Shiver on the River in Detroit. Plus, don’t miss upcoming performances of “Clue” at the Fisher Theatre and a Lunar New Year celebration with the Detroit Pistons at Little Caesars Arena. One Detroit contributor Haley Taylor of 90.9 WRCJ shares what else is coming up around the region on “One Detroit Weekend.”

Upcoming Events: 

  • Terrance Blanchard brings his “A Tale of God’s Will” performance to Orchestra Hall in Detroit on Jan. 31. The Grammy Award-winning piece commemorates the events surrounding hurricane Katrina. 
  • The Detroit Pistons host a Lunar New Year celebration during their Jan. 31 game against the Dallas Mavericks. Tickets to the game include a free Lunar New Year baseball jersey, a Pre-Game Performance, and the opportunity to shoot a free throw after the game. 
  • The Detroit Institute of Arts presents “Drawing in the Galleries: African American” on Jan. 31-Feb. 2 during Black History Month. 
  • The Plymouth Ice Festival takes place in downtown Plymouth Jan. 31 – Feb. 2. The festival includes ice sculptures, tubing, shopping at nearby businesses and more.
  • Shiver of the River: Belle Isle Birding takes place Feb. 1. Attendees will join a car caravan starting at the Belle Isle Nature Center to see winter birds along the Detroit River.  
  • The Twyla Tharp Dance Company brings its “Diamond Jubilee” performance to the Detroit Opera House on Feb. 1 – 2. The performance celebrates the legendary choreographer’s 60-year career. 
  • The Detroit Boat Show returns to Huntington Place in Detroit Feb. 1 – 8. The event features boater safety education classes, live sharks and stingrays, Twiggy the waterskiing squirrel and more attractions.  
  • Broadway in Detroit presents a production of “Clue.” The live adaptation of the popular board game will be performed Feb. 4 – 9 at the Fisher Theatre in Detroit.
