Things to do around Detroit this weekend: November 22, 2024

It’s the holiday season and the lights are shining bright around metro Detroit with the 21st annual Detroit tree lighting at Campus Martius and the Wayne County Lightfest at Hines Park. Plus, enjoy some ice skating during SK8 JAMZ at Suburban Ice Macomb. 

There are also a variety of performances in town this weekend, including “Mean Girls” at the Fisher Theatre, the All-City Poetry Slam 2024 at the Detroit Public Theatre and more. One Detroit contributor Cecelia Sharpe of 90.9 WRCJ shares events coming up around town on “One Detroit Weekend.” 

Upcoming Events: 

  • The 21st annual Detroit tree lighting takes place at Campus Martius in downtown Detroit on Nov. 22. The evening also includes live music, skating performances and more.  
  • Suburban Ice Macomb turns its ice skating rink into a black light party during its SK8 JAMZ events on select Fridays and Saturdays during the holiday season.
  • Wayne County Lightfest will take place at Hines Park in Westland starting Nov. 22 through Dec. 24, featuring nearly 50 animated-themed displays and more than 100,000 lights. 
  • The State Ballet Theatre of Ukraine brings “The Nutcracker” to the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts in Detroit on Nov. 23.  
  • The Oakland Expo Center in Waterford hosts the Shipshewana on the Road Gift, Food and Craft Show on Nov. 23-24. 
  • Joel Fluent Greene hosts “The All-City Poetry Slam 2024: The Finals” at the Detroit Public Theatre on Nov. 24, where 12 poets compete for the grand prize. 
  • The Fisher Theatre in Detroit features a production of the Broadway musical “Mean Girls” through Nov. 24. 
  • The Detroit Aglow takes place on Nov. 25 at MGM Grand Detroit. The event, presented by Amazon, benefits the Downtown Detroit Partnership.
