Sample Value Statement to Congress

I am writing from [City, State] to urge you to protect funding for public media. Federal support is essential for local stations like Detroit PBS, which provide free, accessible services in education, community connection, and public safety.

Local public media stations are often the last sources of local news, especially in rural and underserved areas. The Government Accountability Office has confirmed that federal funding is crucial to maintaining public television’s universal service. At just $1.60 per person annually—less than 0.01% of the federal budget—this investment delivers significant returns. Public television has been ranked the most trusted institution for 21 consecutive years, with 87% of Americans recognizing its value.

Public media thrives at the local level. Detroit PBS prioritizes storytelling that reflects Southeast Michigan, enriching our community without commercial incentives. Detroit PBS provides high-quality, educational programming at no cost and strengthens regional education by supporting teachers with initiatives like the Michigan Learning Channel.

Funding public media is more than supporting television—it sustains vital public services. No other system matches the educational resources, emergency alerts, and community programs that public media offers. From broadcasting lifesaving information via the Emergency Alert System to supporting early childhood education for the 52% of U.S. 3- and 4-year-olds who don’t attend preschool, and operating the nation’s largest nonprofit GED program, public media plays an essential role in my community and beyond.

Please continue to support federal funding for public media. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
