The two organizations have also partnered to discuss topics related to the Future of Work and higher education. The Detroit Economic Club has hosted every U.S. president since Richard Nixon.

Since its founding in 2011, Bedrock and its affiliates have invested and committed more than $7.5 billion to acquire, develop and operate more than 140 properties in Detroit and Cleveland.
Gilbert is an active investor in fintech, sports-related and consumer-direct companies. He founded Detroit Venture Partners (DVP) to fund startup and early-stage technology companies. In 2016, he co-founded Detroit-based StockX, the world’s first ‘stock market of things’, combining the visible, liquid, anonymous and transparent benefits of a stock market with the online consumer secondary market.
Gilbert is a fourth generation Detroiter and a graduate of Michigan State University. He obtained his Juris Doctor from Wayne State University in Detroit.

People are strategically being pushed apart by disinformation — the deliberate spreading of lies disguised as truth — and it comes at them from all sides: opportunists on the far right and Russian misinformed social media influencers, among others. It’s endangering democracy and causing havoc in America&#8217;s electoral system, schools, hospitals, workplaces, and the Capitol.
Advances in technology including rapid developments in artificial intelligence threaten to make the problems even worse by amplifying false claims and manufacturing credibility. In &#8220;<a href="https://www.sevenstories.com/books/4577-attack-from-within" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Attack from Within: How Disinformation is Sabotaging America</a>,&#8221; legal scholar and analyst <a href="https://michigan.law.umich.edu/faculty-and-scholarship/our-faculty/barbara-l-mcquade" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Barbara McQuade</a>, a former United States attorney and current law professor at the University of Michigan, shows us how to identify the ways disinformation is seeping into all facets of our society and how we can fight against it.

McQuade, BA &#8217;87, JD &#8217;91, is a professor from practice at Michigan Law. Her interests include criminal law, criminal procedure, national security, data privacy, and civil rights. From 2010 to 2017, McQuade served as the US attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan. Appointed by President Barack Obama, she was the first woman to serve in her position.
McQuade also served as vice chair of the Attorney General&#8217;s Advisory Committee and co-chaired its Terrorism and National Security Subcommittee. As US attorney, she oversaw cases involving public corruption, terrorism, corporate fraud, theft of trade secrets, civil rights, and health care fraud, among others. She also serves as a legal analyst for NBC News and MSNBC. Her work has appeared in The Washington Post, Foreign Policy, Lawfare, Just Security, Slate, and National Public Radio, and she has been quoted in The New York Times, Time, Newsweek, Politico, and other publications.
Before becoming US attorney, McQuade was an assistant US attorney in Detroit for 12 years, serving as deputy chief of the National Security Unit, where she handled cases involving terrorism financing, export violations, threats, and foreign agents. She began her career practicing law at the firm of Butzel Long in Detroit. She previously taught at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law.
McQuade has been recognized by the Detroit Free Press with the Neal Shine Award for Exemplary Regional Leadership, The Detroit News with the Michiganian of the Year Award, Crain&#8217;s Detroit Business as a Newsmaker of the Year and one of Detroit&#8217;s Most Influential Women, the Detroit Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and Arab American Civil Rights League with their Tribute to Justice Award, and the Council on Legal Education Opportunity with its Diversity Award. McQuade is the author of &#8220;Attack from Within: How Disinformation is Sabotaging America.&#8221;

Governor Gretchen Whitmer is a lifelong Michigander who is focused on getting things done that will make a real difference in people’s lives and build a Michigan where everyone can envision a bright future for themselves. As governor, she has signed over 1,000 bipartisan bills and four balanced, bipartisan budgets to deliver on the kitchen-table issues, grow the economy, and create good-paying jobs in every region of the state.
Since the governor took office, she has announced 35,000 new auto jobs and used bipartisan economic development tools to bring home more than $16 billion in transformational investments, creating 16,000+ jobs and putting Michigan in the lead on innovating the future of cars, chips, batteries, and more. She has fixed nearly 20,000 lane miles of roads and over 1,400 bridges, and funded programs putting almost 200,000 Michiganders on tuition-free paths to higher education and skills training.
The governor has made the largest education investments in state history four years in a row, delivering the highest state per-student funding ever, increasing on-campus mental health resources, and helping hire more qualified teachers, literacy coaches, counselors, and staff. Additionally, the governor has expanded low or no-cost child care to 150,000 more kids.
Governor Whitmer has also protected clean water for every community, investing $4 billion to upgrade drinking water and replace lead service lines, supporting 57,000 jobs. She made the single largest-ever investment in state and local parks across Michigan.
Since the governor took office, Michigan has won over $16 billion in investments and become home to “the next Silicon Valley” for mobility innovation, the #1 emerging startup ecosystem and the fastest growing clean energy job sector in the country.
Governor Whitmer achieved this progress alongside three dynamic elected statewide leaders: Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist, Attorney General Dana Nessel, and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.

On January 26, 2021, Janet Yellen was sworn in as the 78th Secretary of the Treasury of the United States. An economist by training, she took office after almost fifty years in academia and public service. She is the first person in American history to have led the White House Council of Economic Advisors, the Federal Reserve, and the Treasury Department.  
Janet Louise Yellen was born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn in 1946. Her mother, Anna Ruth, was an elementary school teacher while her father, Julius, worked as a family physician, treating patients out of the ground floor of the family’s brownstone. 
In 1967, Secretary Yellen graduated from Brown University and went on to earn her PhD at Yale.  She was an assistant professor at Harvard until 1976 when she began working at the Federal Reserve Board. There, in the Fed’s cafeteria, she met fellow economist, George Akerlof. Janet and George would marry later that year. They would go on to have a son, Robert, now also an economics professor. 
In 1980, Secretary Yellen joined the faculty of the University of California at Berkeley, where she became the Eugene E. and Catherine M. Trefethen Professor of Business and Professor of Economics. She is Professor Emeritus at the university. 
Secretary Yellen’s scholarship has focused on a range of issues pertaining to labor and macroeconomics. Her work on “efficiency wages” with her husband George Akerlof studied why firms often choose to pay more than the minimum needed to hire employees. These businesses, they found, are often making a wise decision.  Firms that offer better pay and working conditions tend to be rewarded with higher morale, reduced turnover and greater productivity.  
In 1994, President Bill Clinton appointed then-Dr. Yellen to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. Three years later, he named her Chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers. 
In 2004, Secretary Yellen began her third tenure at the Federal Reserve, this time as President of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. From that post, she spotted a worrying economic trend – a bubble in home values. When the housing bubble popped in 2008, Secretary Yellen helped manage the resulting financial crisis and recession. In 2010, President Barack Obama, appointed her Vice Chair of the Federal Reserve, before nominating her to succeed Fed Chair Benjamin Bernanke as the nation’s top central banker. Secretary Yellen would serve as Chair of the Federal Reserve from 2014 until 2018. 
On December 1, 2020, then-President-elect Biden nominated Dr. Janet Yellen to the post of Treasury Secretary. “She has spent her career focused on unemployment and the dignity of work,” he said, “She understands what it means to people and their communities when they have good, decent jobs.”
Prior to serving at the Treasury Department, Secretary Yellen was a Distinguished Fellow in Residence with the Economic Studies Program at the Brookings Institution.  During 2020-2021 she served as President of the American Economic Association.  She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Council on Foreign Relations.  She was also a founding member of the Climate Leadership Council. 
Secretary Yellen has served on the advisory boards of the Bloomberg New Economic Forum, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget and Fix the Debt Coalition (CRFB), and the Washington Center for Equitable Growth Steering Committee.  She was elected to the Yale Corporation as an alumni fellow in 2000, serving until 2006.
Dr. Yellen has received honorary doctorates from Bard College, Brown, the London School of Economics, NYU, the University of Baltimore, the University of Michigan, the University of Warwick and Yale from which she also received the Wilbur Cross Medal for distinguished achievements in scholarship, teaching, academic administration, and public service.

Messer, Jr. is charged with implementing and executing MEDC’s core mission of business development and attraction, community development, providing access to capital and enhancing Michigan’s image and brand with a focus on building a strong and equitable economy for all Michiganders.
Immediately prior to his role as CEO of MEDC, Messer served as President and CEO of New Orleans Business Alliance (NOLABA) leading efforts around business attraction, small business growth, talent development, branding, and driving market-responsive, equitable economic growth for New Orleans residents.
As the assistant secretary at Louisiana Economic Development, Messer was designated President of the Louisiana Economic Development Corporation, helping to provide financial assistance to small and medium size businesses in partnership with the private sector and federal agencies including the U.S. Small Business Administration.
Messer’s private sector experience includes The Boston Consulting Group and O’Melveny &amp; Myers LLP, as well as work at a variety of start-up ventures, including as a principal at Foster Chamberlain, LLC – a start-up venture accelerator and corporate venturing consultancy.
An IEDC certified economic developer (CEcD), Messer received a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University, where he was a Princeton School of Public and International Affairs major and earned his Juris Doctorate and Master of Business Administration from Columbia University’s Law and Business Schools, respectively. He sits on the board of directors of the International Economic Development Council, where he serves on the board’s Committee for Public Conduct and also is the incoming Co-Chair of the Racism in Economic Development Committee. Messer was named in Consultants Connect North America’s Top 50 Economic Developers in both 2019 and 2020.

Prior to joining RSQE, Dr. Ehrlich worked in the Financial Analysis Division at the Congressional Budget Office, where he forecasted interest rates and conducted analysis on monetary policy and the mortgage finance system.

Sal Khan is the founder and CEO of <a href="https://www.khanacademy.org/">Khan Academy</a>, a nonprofit organization with a mission to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. He is also the founder of <a href="https://khanlabschool.org/">Khan Lab School</a>, a nonprofit laboratory school in Mountain View, California.
Sal’s interest in education began while he was an undergraduate at MIT. While there, he developed math software for children with ADHD and tutored fourth- and seventh-grade public school students in Boston, Massachusetts. Sal also taught test prep courses for the MCAT and was named Teacher of the Year by a national test prep company. He holds three degrees from MIT and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Sal founded Khan Academy as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Khan Academy offers free lessons in math, history, grammar, physics, biology, and many more subjects. The nonprofit organization’s mastery learning system allows students to learn at their own pace. Teachers can use Khan Academy to track student progress, identify gaps in learning, make assignments, and provide tailored instruction.
Today more than 109 million registered users access Khan Academy in 46 languages in more than 190 countries. As a nonprofit, Khan Academy relies on donations from foundations, corporations and individuals around the world, as well as earned revenue.
Sal has been profiled by 60 Minutes, featured on the cover of Forbes, and recognized as one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People in the World. In his book, The One World Schoolhouse, Sal outlines his vision for the future of education. The ideas in One World are the basis for Khan Lab School.
Sal lives in Mountain View, California, with his wife and three children.

The Detroit Economic Club presented a conversation with Citi CEO Mike Corbat. It was streamed live from the Westin Book Cadillac by Detroit Public TV on October 8.
From macro-economic uncertainty and trade tensions to income inequality, increasing expectations that companies will be engaged on a range of social issues and widespread questioning of the global capitalist model, the business community today must adapt to meet the demands and responsibilities of companies in a modern, diversified economy and society.
Citi CEO Mike Corbat, leader of the world’s most global bank, shared his views on some of the most pressing issues facing businesses. He spoke to the evolving role that banks of all sizes play in driving economic expansion and how they help drive America’s competitiveness.
 
ABOUT MICHAEL CORBAT
Michael L. Corbat is Chief Executive Officer of Citigroup, the world&#8217;s global bank, with approximately 200 million customer accounts and activities in more than 160 countries and jurisdictions.
Since becoming CEO in 2012, he has focused on leveraging Citi&#8217;s unique global network to serve its institutional and consumer banking clients with an emphasis on strong execution and the highest ethical standards. In the process, Mr. Corbat has made Citi a simpler, smaller, safer and stronger institution. Citi has improved the quality and consistency of earnings, and Mr. Corbat is committed to creating shareholder value by serving Citi&#8217;s stakeholders and fulfilling Citi&#8217;s mission of enabling economic growth and progress.
Mr. Corbat has been at Citi and its predecessor companies since his graduation from Harvard University with a bachelor&#8217;s degree in economics in 1983. Prior to his current role, Mr. Corbat was CEO of Europe, Middle East and Africa where he oversaw all of Citi&#8217;s business operations in the region, including consumer banking, corporate and investment banking, securities and trading and private banking services. Previously, Mr. Corbat served as the CEO of Citi Holdings, Citi&#8217;s portfolio of non-core businesses and assets. In this role, he oversaw the divestiture of more than 40 businesses and divested more than $500 billion assets, reducing risk on the Company&#8217;s balance sheet and freeing up capital to invest in Citi&#8217;s core banking business.
Mr. Corbat has also served as the CEO of Citi&#8217;s Global Wealth Management unit and was Head of the Global Corporate and Global Commercial Bank at Citi, a role in which he led the firm&#8217;s efforts to provide best-in-class financial services to top-tier multi-national corporations and financial institutions around the world.
Mr. Corbat has been honored by several civic and cultural organizations. He serves as Chairman of The Clearing House Association Supervisory Board and Vice Chairman of the Financial Services Forum. He is also an executive committee member of the Partnership for New York City, a permanent board member of the Bank Policy Institute, and sits on the Board of Trustees of the United States Ski and Snowboard Association.

ABOUT DEBBIE DINGELL Congresswoman Debbie Dingell represents Michigan’s 12th District in the U.S. House of Representatives, where she has made it a priority to be a voice for the Midwest on issues that matter most to working families. A member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, Debbie is a leader on efforts to grow manufacturing, improve access to quality affordable health care, support seniors and veterans and protect the Great Lakes. Recognized as one of the 25 hardest-working Members of Congress, Debbie is focused on forging bipartisan solutions that support Michigan’s working families, including improving long-term care and ushering in the future of the American auto industry. Before being elected to Congress, Debbie worked in the auto industry for more than three decades, where she was President of the General Motors (GM) Foundation and a senior executive responsible for public affairs. A champion for bipartisan solutions, Fred Upton is Vice Chair of the House Problem Solvers Caucus. The Detroit Economic Club presented a conversation with Vice President of the United States of America, Mike Pence. It was streamed live from the MotorCity Casino Hotel by Detroit Public TV on Monday, August 19. 
Michael R. Pence was born in Columbus, Indiana, one of six children born to Edward and Nancy Pence, who ran a successful convenience store business. He says that they taught him the importance of hard work, faith and family.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in history in 1981 from Hanover College, later attending Indiana University School of Law where he met his wife, Second Lady Karen Pence.
After graduating, Vice President Pence practiced law, led the Indiana Policy Review Foundation, and began hosting “The Mike Pence Show,” a syndicated talk radio show and a weekly television public affairs program in Indiana. Along the way he became the proud father to three children, Michael, Charlotte and Audrey.
In 2000, he launched a successful bid for his local congressional seat, entering the U.S. House of Representatives at the age of 40. The people of East-Central Indiana elected Vice President Pence six times to represent them in Congress. On Capitol Hill he championed limited government, fiscal responsibility, economic development and educational opportunity. He was elected by his colleagues to serve as chair of the House Republican Study Committee and House Republican Conference Chairman.
In 2013, Vice President Pence was elected the 50th governor of Indiana, where he says he increased school funding, expanded school choice, created the first state-funded Pre-K plan in Indiana history and invested more than $800 million in new money for roads and bridges across the state, while managing to pass two balanced budgets – before being tapped by Pres. Trump to run for higher office.

The Detroit Economic Club presented a conversation with Chairwoman of the Republican National Committee (RNC), Ronna McDaniel. It was streamed live from the MotorCity Casino Hotel by Detroit Public TV on Monday, June 10 .
In 2017, Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel became the second woman ever elected as Chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC). Under her leadership, the RNC raised record funds and made its largest ever ground game investment. President Trump asked Chairwoman McDaniel to continue to lead the RNC through the 2020 election cycle thanks to her record of results for the Party.
Prior to her tenure at the RNC, Chairwoman McDaniel served as the Chair of the Michigan Republican Party, where she helped deliver the state for President Donald J. Trump and the Party for the first time since 1988. She began her career in politics as a grassroots activist, serving as a precinct delegate, a district committee executive member, a state party committeewoman in Michigan, an RNC committeewoman and as a national delegate to the 2012 Republican National Convention representing Michigan’s 11th District.
In her local community of Northville, Michigan, Chairwoman McDaniel has served on land planning and public safety committees, and has been actively involved in her local Parent Teacher Association. The Detroit Economic Club presented a conversation with Jim Hackett, president and chief executive officer at Ford Motor Company, streamed live from Ford Field by Detroit Public TV on Tuesday, April 9.
Jim Hackett is president and chief executive officer, Ford Motor Company, effective May 22, 2017. He also is a member of the company’s board of directors.
Under Hackett’s leadership, together with Bill Ford, Ford is committed to becoming the world’s most trusted company, designing smart vehicles for a smart world that help people move more safely, confidently and freely.
Prior to serving in this role, Hackett was chairman of Ford Smart Mobility LLC, a subsidiary of Ford formed to accelerate the company’s plans to design, build, grow and invest in emerging mobility services. He was named to the position March 10, 2016.
Before joining Ford Smart Mobility, Hackett was a member of the Ford Motor Company Board of Directors starting in 2013. As a member of the Sustainability and Innovation committee, he was actively involved with the Ford senior leadership team in launching the company’s Ford Smart Mobility plan. He also served on the Audit and the Nominating and Governance committees.
Hackett was vice chairman of Steelcase, the global leader in the office furniture industry, from 2014 to 2015. He retired as CEO of Steelcase in February 2014, after having spent 20 years leading the Grand Rapids-based office furniture company.
As a consumer-focused visionary in the office furniture industry, Hackett is credited with guiding Steelcase to becoming a global leader. During his 30 years there, he helped transform the office furniture company from traditional manufacturer to industry innovator. Having spent his career focused on the evolving needs of consumers, Hackett is recognized for predicting that the office landscape would shift away from cubicles to an open space environment, giving employees the flexibility to work where they want.
Hackett is well known for his creative management approach to business. Through an equity investment by Steelcase in IDEO, an international consulting firm, Hackett forged a unique business relationship with its CEO David Kelley to foster design innovation at the office furniture company. At that time in 1996, IDEO specialized in the design of a number of consumer products, office equipment, medical instrumentation, furniture and computers including design of the first “mouse” for early Apple computers.
He was interim director of athletics at the University of Michigan from October 31, 2014 to March 11, 2016 where he led the search for a permanent athletic director appointed in January 2016. He played center on the University of Michigan football team prior to graduating from the university with a bachelor’s degree in 1977.

The Detroit Economic Club presented a conversation with Hamilton producer, Jeffrey Seller, streamed live from the Masonic Temple by Detroit Public TV on Wednesday, March 27 at 12:35pm ET.
Jeffrey Seller is the winner of four Tony-Awards for Best Musical: Rent (1996), Avenue Q (2004), In the Heights (2008) and Hamilton (2016). Jeffrey also produced and/or developed De La Guarda (1998), Andrew Lippa’s The Wild Party (2000), Baz Luhrmann’s direction of Puccini’s La Bohème (2002), High Fidelity (2006), the Broadway revival of West Side Story (2009) and Sting’s The Last Ship (2014). Seller, along with former business partner Kevin McCollum, created the first Broadway lottery for Rent, which, for 22 years, has been a popular way to see Broadway shows, often in the first two rows, at an affordable price. He is the only producer to have produced two Pulitzer Prize-winning musicals&#8211;Rent and Hamilton.
Jeffrey was executive producer of the NBC Drama Rise (2018). He opens his new musical, The Cher Show, at the Neil Simon Theatre in November. In the summer of 2017, he directed a new musical based on Jules Feiffer’s young-adult novel, The Man in the Ceiling, at the Bay Street Theater. He directed Fly at Dallas Theatre Center in 2013.
Jeffrey grew up in Oak Park, Michigan and is a proud graduate of the University of Michigan.

The Detroit Economic Club Presents
The opioid epidemic has devastated families and communities across the nation, with 2 million Americans diagnosed with opioid-use disorder and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/15/upshot/opioids-overdose-deaths-rising-fentanyl.html?emc=edit_nn_20180816&amp;nl=morning-briefing&amp;nlid=6712710720180816&amp;te=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a record 72,000 overdose deaths estimated in 2017</a>. In addition, the national crisis has become an enormous financial burden for employers – at an estimated cost of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/whitehouse.gov/files/images/The%20Underestimated%20Cost%20of%20the%20Opioid%20Crisis.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$504 billion</a>.
With new research showing 49 percent of employers — large and small — are impacted by employees’ use of opioids, Chris Swift, Chairman and CEO of The Hartford,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/healthiest-communities/articles/2018-05-31/the-heavy-toll-of-opioids-on-americas-labor-force" target="_blank" rel="noopener">believes opioids are a critical workplace issue</a>&nbsp;that today’s businesses must address. He will drive a solutions-oriented discussion around actions that companies of all sizes can take to help reduce the impact of opioids in the workplace and steps that policymakers can take to support employers in fighting the epidemic.

Author Alan Mallach and Detroit Development Director Maurice Cox discuss how to assure the city’s resurgence leaves no citizen behind. They shared their thoughts on what’s happening in America’s cities and on Detroit’s urban revival in a discussion moderated by Bankole Thompson, an author, Detroit News columnist and radio show host.
Maurice Cox, Detroit’s Planning and Development Director, leads the long term vision for a redeveloped Detroit: improving Detroit’s neighborhoods, developing strategies to boost stable areas of the city with new business and residential development, and devise uses for the vast tracts of vacant lots and other city-owned properties.
Alan Mallach is a fellow at the Center for Community Progress and author of “The Divided City: Poverty and Prosperity in Urban America.” The Divided City offers strategies to foster greater equality and opportunity. Mallach also previously served as Director of Housing and Urban Development for the City of Trenton, New Jersey.
Together, Alan and Maurice shared their thoughts on what’s happening in America’s cities and on Detroit’s urban revival.
